4 - Distorted Reflection - Work Diary

Evaluation

During this shoot, I had the experience and inspiration from my last work diaries as to where I wanted to go with it. Previously, I looked at reflections which were already present and how they showed something that we could not see in the frame originally. Now, after looking at different photographers and how they approach reflection, I wanted to create reflections that were not there. I did this by altering what the reflection was or by creating one by placing it in there. For example, I had looked at how I wanted to change the reflection in the mirror by what was actually going on. I placed the camera on the tripod and took two images, one where the person was just looking into the mirror. Secondly, I took an image of them doing an action in the mirror. This is what I would put in the reflection of the mirror to show the difference and contrast it greatly. The image that follows shows how I altered the image in the mirror as appose to what the person is actually doing. It is visible that she is putting on lipstick in real life, where in the mirror she is pouting and pushing up her hair. I thought this was a successful shoot as I was able to use a range of different positions in order for it to work. However, I did struggle with coming up with ideas of what to do with the people in the images, as they started to look too similar and didn't stand out as much.

Progression

In the future, if I was to go back and reshoot parts of what I had done in this shoot. I would look for a room which had a bigger mirror which would enhance what I could shoot in the images. The main problems with this shoot was how I had to completely change the angle of the people in the mirror in order for them to be seen clearly. I also looked at eyes in this shoot, and how I could place different images in eyes in order for it to show the reflection. To move on from this shoot, next time, I will look at the eyes more and what I can do with different objects to enhance the eye. For example, I could draw outlines of eyes in glowsticks.
